When you went to buy chemical fertilizer at the ag store, you might say, "I need 10-20-10" or "40-30-40," which meant the percentages of NPK: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). NPK are macronutrients every plant needs, something like fat, protein, and carbohydrate to you. 

NPK is something else to me, too: my initials.
